Your tour begins as you board your motorcoach for a two-hour, panoramic drive to Giant's Causeway, an area of about 40,000 interlocking basalt columns. En route, you'll drive along the Antrim Coast, one of the loveliest coastlines in Northern Europe. You'll take in both the shore with its tiny fishing villages, and small resorts and the countryside, with sweeping views of farmlands, villages and rolling moors.
You'll marvel at the town of Larne, the most modern and the most ancient of places. The name Larne is believed to have derived from a prince called Lathar, son of an ancient Irish king, who was granted the lands by his father. Today, the town combines a historical past with modern port, shopping and leisure facilities.
You'll drive past the fine harbor of Carnlough bustling with yachts and pleasure boats, then make a stop for coffee and scones before continuing to Ballycastle, (Town of the Castle), home to an ancient castle built by the Earl of Antrim in 1609, and the oldest surviving remains of Bonamargie Friary. Originally thatched, Bonamargie Friary consists of a chapel, vaults, gatehouse, cloisters, living quarters and a graveyard.
You'll make a photo stop at Carrick-A-Rede Rope Bridge, a rope suspension bridge that links the mainland to the tiny Carrick Island. The geology, flora and fauna have won Carrick-a-Rede recognition as an area of special scientific interest. Be sure to keep your camera ready as you pass White Park Bay, a spectacular sandy beach backed by ancient dunes that provide a range of rich habitats for bird and animal life.
Your ultimate destination, Giant's Causeway, is next on your itinerary. Renowned for its polygonal columns of layered basalt, the Causeway is considered the Eighth Wonder of the World, and is the only World Heritage Site in Northern Ireland.
